Community Free Day + Helen Daniels Bader Tribute

May is a month to celebrate! Not only is it Jewish American Heritage Month and Mental Health Awareness Month, but it is also the month that one of Milwaukee’s most beloved and magnanimous benefactors, Helen Daniels Bader, was born.

On this special day, please join Jewish Museum Milwaukee and Bader Philanthropies for several free experiences that celebrate the passions and pursuits of Helen Daniels Bader, including tours of the Museum’s current special exhibit, Choices of Consequence: Denmark and the Holocaust, a brief program on Jewish meditation and mindfulness, followed by an experiential guided meditation and sound bath.

We will wrap up the celebration with a toast by Bader Philanthropies to the significant legacy that Helen’s work began over 30 years ago. Kosher tea and desserts will be provided, followed by violin music from the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music’s Tatiana Migliaccio.

Schedule At-A-Glance:

  • 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Galleries are free and open to the public
  • 10:00 – 11:00 a.m. A private and fully funded school tour of Choices of Consequence
  • 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Public floating docent tours of Choices of Consequence
  • 12:30 – 1:00 p.m. Lunch & Learn: Jewish Meditation and Mindfulness with Chana Kittner, licensed hypnotherapist from Shalem Healing
  • 1:30 – 2:30 p.m. Experiential guided meditation & sound bath with SYINTHESIS® Sound*
  • 3:00 – 4:00 p.m. Toast to Helen Daniels Bader with tea and dessert stations, followed by violin music from the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music’s Tatiana Migliaccio

*Please bring a yoga mat, pillow, blanket or other comfort item to make your meditation and sound bath experience as comfortable as possible. Chairs and space to sit or lay on the floor will be provided.

Meet Helen Daniels Bader*

Helen Daniels Bader, one of Milwaukee’s most beloved and magnanimous benefactors, grew up a child of the Depression behind the soda fountain of her father’s drug store in Aberdeen, South Dakota. She became a devoted wife, loving mother, and successful businesswoman before embarking on, later in life, a career as a licensed social worker. Specializing in the care of the elderly, she was an early advocate for those afflicted with Alzheimer’s disease, and ahead of her time when it came to envisioning and promoting effective strategies related to their care.

Bader’s legacy is significant. The $100 million Helen Bader Foundation was established in 1991, two years after her death; over the next 24 years, it awarded $250 million in grants designed to enhance the well-being of the impoverished and disadvantaged. That mission continues today at Bader Philanthropies, Inc. Bader’s life – and specifically her belief in the value of social work – is further immortalized through the Helen Bader School of Social Welfare at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
